Shopping as an Athlete
In this post, we’re going to go over how to efficiently shop as an athlete! As a CrossFit athlete I’m sure you’ve realized you should be eating a lot more than you may have in the past, which can bring a hefty increase to our spending…YIKES!
BUT.. thats not always the case! If you can follow these simple rules, being a healthy athlete doesn’t mean you have to break the bank.
- Stick to the Basics: Fancy organic, grass fed, gluten free items doesn’t always mean high quality. For instance, sometimes marketers will smack sugar-free, gluten free, fat-free all over a package, then up the price point for no added benefit! So, stick to the basics and if you ever have any questions about products, ask one of our coaches.
- You can have your Cake & Eat it too (Unfortunately not literally): This tip pertains to getting quality and quantity into your diet! Starchy vegetables can go a LONG way in our meals. For example, 2 large baked sweet potatoes can last for a week when weighed and portioned correctly. Some other carb ideas are: Butternut Squash, Spaghetti Squash, Japanese Sweet Potatoes, Oatmeal, Brown Rice, Whole grain Breads, and Beans!
- Shop at the Right Places: Sam’s Club, Walmart, Costco, and buying in bulk should be your friend! It may be initially more expensive but these items last a LONG time. You can get chicken breasts, ground turkey (pay attention to fat content), fruits, intra carb options, and vegetables for a lower cost with more quantity. (Pro tip: you can freeze meats you don’t use for the week)
- Plan ahead: Try your best to find time to plan ahead before you head out to the grocery store. If you are following macros, you can use a great tool called MyFitnessPal. On the app, you can always play around with the serving sizes, so before you head out to the grocery store you can see what fits your macros beforehand.
